THE IRISH FOSTER CARE ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES ‘MOVING FORWARD’

A NEW PROGRAMME INFORMING AND SUPPORTING FOSTER CARERS ON THE IMPACT OF CHANGE, GRIEF AND LOSS IN THE CONTEXT OF FOSTER CARE

The Irish Foster Care Association secured funding in late 2017, from Pobal, through the Dormant Accounts Fund (under its strand of funding for those caring for others) for a new programme for members called ‘Moving Forward’.  The programme will offer foster carers a space to share their experiences, reflect on the many changes in their lives through their fostering experience and come together in a supportive and confidential setting.  The overall aim is to inform and support foster carers on the impact of change, grief and loss in the context of foster care.

The programme will take place over three workshops and will provide an overview of change, grief and loss, validate and de-mystify experiences that many will have already encountered or may encounter in the future and focus on self-care, resilience and coping strategies, all in the context of foster care.

The focus of these workshops is to provide a space for foster carers to explore and reflect on the many changes in their lives as foster carers.  It is hoped that this time and space can be used by foster carers to look at their own individual experience.  IFCA envisions that this programme will allow participants the time to consider where they have found themselves in the context of past, present and potential future changes and experiences of loss.

Speaking about the new programme Catherine Bond, CEO, the Irish Foster Care Association commented: “From our ongoing support work, we have long been aware that loss presents itself in a number of unique and individual ways for foster carers. We are delighted that we have secured funding to provide a programme for carers to explore and reflect on these experiences”.
