IFCA Response To Roscommom Abuse Case

The Irish Foster Care Association (IFCA) in response to the horrific events unfolding in Roscommon are unambiguous in calling for the referendum on children's rights to be on this government's agenda during 2009.

The Irish Foster Care Association believes child protection is everybody's responsibility.   The HSE, social workers, public health nurses and G.P.'s have a prescribed duty to comply with the Child Care Act '91 and Children's First Guidelines, however we must all share in the protection of our children.

To this end IFCA would like children's rights issues to come back firmly on the agenda and not always be subservient to the rights of parents.

The value of well supported foster care homes has been highlighted by this event.   It often happens that when children are placed in safe nurturing environments following such traumatic events, further disclosures are made.

Foster parents are trained to open their homes and hearts to deal with such events and support children through these difficult times.

IFCA commends the courage of the Aunt and young boy who alerted authorities to this horrendous case.
